Listen to the Cole Cullins Interview
Cole Cullins on the Leap to the Pro Class
The first-ever On the Pegs Podcast is here. We’re kicking things off with Pro trials rider and Beta USA Factory standout Cole Cullins.
Hosted by On the Pegs owner Steph Vetterly and Beta USA teammate Abigail Buzzelli, Episode 1 explores Cole’s journey in motorcycle trials. He started riding at just three years old. Years later, he earned the Expert Championship and made the jump to the demanding NATC Pro class.
However, moving to the top level came with challenges. Cole talks honestly about the shock of going from winning regularly to struggling in Pro sections. He also shares how the pressure and expectations affected his mindset.
Inside the Mind of a Pro Trials Rider
During the conversation, the group discusses what it takes to succeed in the Pro class of motorcycle trials.
For example, Cole explains why time management in sections becomes critical at the highest level. The trio also talks about the role of a minder and how the right support can make a huge difference in competition.
In addition, they explore how family dynamics and support systems shape a rider’s mentality. In trials, success often depends on more than just riding skill.
Injuries, Burnout, and Rediscovering the Sport
Like many top athletes, Cole has faced setbacks. Injuries and burnout challenged his motivation and tested his commitment to the sport.
However, staying involved in the trials community helped him reconnect with what he loves about riding. Today, he coaches younger riders and serves as a Beta trials ambassador. As a result, he has found a new perspective on competition and growth.
A New Podcast for the Trials Community
This first episode of the On the Pegs Podcast delivers a candid look at life in professional motorcycle trials. The conversation is honest, insightful, and often hilarious.
More importantly, it sets the tone for future episodes. Expect real discussions about trials riding, athlete development, and the challenges of competing at the highest level.
What is Motorcycle Trials?
Motorcycle trials, often called observed trials, is a highly technical form of off-road motorcycle competition that focuses on balance, precision, and control rather than speed. Riders navigate a series of obstacle sections made up of rocks, logs, steep climbs, and other natural terrain. The goal is simple: complete each section with as few mistakes as possible, ideally without putting a foot on the ground.
Unlike most forms of motorcycle racing, trials emphasizes finesse and technique over outright power. Riders carefully manage throttle, clutch, and body position to maintain traction and control through difficult obstacles.
Motorcycle trials is competed worldwide, with events ranging from local club competitions to national championships and international events.
